Dr. Michael D. Murphy Joins ARMC Medical Staff

Athens, TN - Michael D. Murphy, MD, an internal medicine specialist, has joined the active medical staff at Athens Regional Medical Center as a hospitalist.
A hospitalist is a physician who sees patients only during an emergency room visit or inpatient stay, and does not have a practice outside the hospital. The role of hospitalist is relatively new to the medical field, and has caught on rapidly. The hospitalist provides inpatient care, keeping in close communication with the primary care physician. Once discharged, patients go for follow up care with their family doctor.
Dr. Murphy came to Athens from Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, North Carolina, where he also served as a Hospitalist. He is a graduate of Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at East Carolina University School of Medicine, Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, North Carolina.
A resident of North Carolina, Dr. Murphy came to Athens because he likes the small town atmosphere and the friendly people. According to ARMC Chief Executive Officer, John Workman, it is a good fit for the hospital too. "We are excited to have Dr. Murphy join our medical community at ARMC. We are fortunate to have someone with his extensive skills and training as part of our healthcare team," says Workman.
Dr. Murphy is a resident of Athens.
