The past few years have been a time of growth and expansion for Athens Regional Medical Center. The largest financial endeavor in the history of the hospital began with construction of a two-story office building for physician practices known as Athens Medical Arts Plaza. Several physicians have had their practices open in the new building since February '06, and in January '09 it also became home of the new "Athens Regional Breast Center."
The new Breast Center is designed specifically for women and offers digital mammography, breast ultrasound, stereotactic biopsies, bone densitometry and lab all under one roof. Women can feel at ease during their exam by knowing the layout of the new center will ensure a discrete and thorough visit.
Digital mammography is twice as fast, more comfortable and produces clearer images that allow us to find breast diseases much quicker than with traditional film.
Breast Ultrasound is available to take a closer look at suspicious findings that may show up on a woman's mammogram. Ultrasound can help determine if the finding is either a cyst (benign) or a mass (malignant).
If a biopsy is required to do further testing on suspicious areas, then a Stereotactic Breast Biopsy can be performed right there within the breast center. This technique allows your physician to take a sample of the suspicious area without the need of surgery. The procedure takes less than an hour.

Bone densitometry testing is also available within the new center. It's a simple, fast, and effective test to assess bone health and osteoporosis. Often times women schedule bone densitometry screening along with their mammogram.
If lab work is needed, it can be drawn at the Breast Center. No need to go anyway else on campus.
Also new in 2009, ARMC will put "hospitality" into your hospital visit.
Guest internet service allows patients, family and friends, physicians and vendors who have a wireless laptop to connect to the internet. The service is available in several patient and waiting areas. Our guests are able to keep up with friends, family and work while visiting or recuperating at Athens Regional Medical Center.
